SHC Travels to Puerto Rico

So travel season is in full swing for me! My latest trip was to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. The place I affectionately call my home.

To start off, let me share a little about myself. I was born in Bronx, NY. Daughter to two beautiful Puerto Rican migrants who came to the United States independently chasing the American dream. Growing up, my first language was Spanish. Mom felt I spoke enough English at school and wanted to make sure that even though I lived in NY, I was in touch with my heritage. So summers and holiday breaks were spent in Puerto Rico with my grandparents, and thanks to them and my parents, I grew up to be a beautiful blend of both my American and Puerto Rican culture.

Fast forward to the present day, my parents have since migrated back to the land they left behind many years ago and I am the lucky girl who continues spending holidays, long weekends and vacations at my second home in the beautiful town of Manati, PR.

Now, on to my most recent trip! This one was low key. I had three main objectives: spend time with my folks, spend time at the beach, and spend time with the beautifully budding plus size community on the island.

First up was a shopping trip with mom. We traveled to the town of Barceloneta to the outlet mall. Puerto Rico has great shopping and Barceloneta is always one of my stops while on the island.

Next we traveled a little east to the town of Vega Baja. Now, Puerto Rico has tons of incredible beaches, but I love this little local beach which is only minutes from our home. The water is calm, warm and tourist free. Please! If you are traveling to Puerto Rico, don't judge our beach-quality by the ones in the San Juan area. While I love San Juan, our best and most amazing beaches are not in the capital city.

To wrap up the week, I treated my folks to a weekend in San Juan. While there I had the incredible pleasure of connecting with the amazing plus size powerhouse Suzanne Guzman. Suzanne has been the driving force behind the plus size movement in Puerto Rico and has relentlessly pushed for more brands, access to options, and representation within the industry. I am honored to be her friend and excited about the synergies we are forging.

Anyway, back to the plus size meet-up we hosted. Oh my goodness, that night was completely unbelievable. From the gorgeous venue, Serafina Restaurant which had just opened a few days prior, to the beautifully diverse woman and men that joined us! The stories they shared of empowerment, how they are breaking barriers and challenging the norm on the island, and their passion for fashion filled my soul. A huge kiss goes out to our sponsor Avon PR, the Sustyletv team and all of the gorgeous people that came out.

As I reflect back today, there was no better way that I could have ended my trip!
