5 Steps for Creating a Tranquil Bedroom

Last week I shared with you my vision behind Redefining a Healthy Home; to help women understand how wellness, beauty, fashion and self-love can strengthen their inner core and help them build healthier versions of themselves.  Today, I am excited to share with you my first edition of this new series all focused on creating a tranquil bedroom environment.

Before I get into my top tips, let me first paint a picture for you of what my bedroom use to look like. My room was dark, overcrowded and not functional. An oversized sleigh bed took up most of the space in my small bedroom and paired with its oversized dresser and side tables, we were left with minimal room to move. Honestly, I hated spending time in my room and it always felt like no matter what I did it still looked messy. Yes and the grey curtains and purple walls didn’t help with the doom and gloom feeling it had. Now you see why I had to start off first with my bedroom? Well, I am excited to share with you my top 5 steps to creating a tranquil bedroom. I now spend a lot of time in my peaceful space, whether it is meditating, reading, watching TV or playing with Anakin. It is my favorite sanctuary and I am hoping that with these tips you can reach the same serenity.

Out with the old and in with the new

Before we started with any of the remodeling we knew de-cluttering was a must. Armed with trash bags and boxes we got to work. We had a box for donation, one for items that we were keeping and one for items we were gifting to friends and family, everything else went into the trash bags. We started this process about a week before the rest of the work started in order to give ourselves enough time to go through everything.  The one thing I didn't want to do was put junk back into our freshly remodeled bedroom.

Savings Tip:

Before tossing or giving away furniture think about where else you can use it in your house.  For example our side tables were painted and repurposed into our guest room and entryway and an old Ikea bookcase became our new TV stand in our bedroom.

Pick colors that you love and bring you peace

The top thing on my "to-do" list was paint. Bye bye purple and help beautiful, crisp, bright white. Well actually it wasn't white, but more like a super light gray.  Silver Polish from Behr was the perfect color to lighten up our room without going too far into the "hospital" white realm.  We actually loved this color so much that we used it throughout our entire house.

Savings Tip:

Opt for paint with built in primer. It might look more expensive up front but it will save you on time and money in the long run. Also, find out from your local paint store when they put out the "oops" paint, aka incorrectly mixed paint typically sold at drastically reduced prices. Warning, all of the good colors typically go very fast so make sure to stalk you local paint shop to snag big deals on your favorite accent colors.

You spend 8 hours of your day in bed, make it beautiful and functional

Next up it was time to go furniture shopping.  Adios bulky furniture and hello functional furniture that helped not hurt our way of life.  At first I will say that bae and I were not in agreement over this bed. I really did not want another big bed and he insisted we needed a king size. Well, while I am still not sold that we NEEDED a king size bed, I did let him have the win on this one since once I saw it I had to have it.  To increase space in our room we opted not to get any of the complimenting furniture pieces and instead use untraditional items for storage and side tables – more on that in a future post.

Savings Tip:

We opted on going into an actual furniture store to purchase our bed but before we did we checked its price online. Turns out the online store from where we shopped had the best price, which our store price matched and saved us hundreds of dollars.

Investing in quality bedding and textiles will transform your bedroom into a mini retreat

Part of my condition left me in bed for days on end so a good mattress and bedding was a must. Our mattress was our largest investment and let me tell you it was the best investment. A good night sleep is a must for everyone so definitely make this a top on your list. Next came bedding and let me say I fell in love with the options at fullbeauty.com – yes ladies, aside from amazing fashion pieces they also have a whole home section with tons of amazing bedding, furniture and home accent items.  I opted for the Royal Comforter Collection because I loved the color combination and it came with everything!  Yes the 20-piece set came with everything you need to dress your room, which means no guessing on what pillows and curtains to buy. To plump up my bed even more I also invested in a mattress pad, plush pillows and a set of luxurious sheets to compliment the room. Tada!  A hotel retreat in my own home.

Savings Tip:

Look for home options in one stop shopping websites like fullbeauty.com. I loved getting most of my items from one place plus I was able to take advantage of clearance prices and coupons for deeper savings. Also, while shopping for a mattress always negotiate. Mattresses have a huge markup so get ready to put your game face on.

Candles, diffusers and soft lighting create an inviting environment

Last but not least it was time to add the finishing touches to our space. I love candles so they were a must on my list. Paired with soft lighting from our brand new lamps and our twinkle curtains our room was ready for its big reveal.

Savings Tip:

Shop discount stores for candles and home accessories. Scout out the clearance section at these stores and you will be surprised how much you save on that Yankee Candle.

So there you have it, my 5 steps to creating a tranquil bedroom environment. What are your secrets for creating a peaceful space?

These are some great tips! I agree that everyone should invest in a good mattress and I'm all about repurposing where possible to save some dough. One tip I always give for any space is to hang wall art that you love, whether it's something whimsical, inspiring or just amazing to look at.
