The girl I discovered in 2016

2016 is almost coming to a close and for most the 31st couldn’t come any sooner. Well for me 2016 has delivered some of my biggest life lessons and many of you have joined me on this master class of life. From blog posts, social media shares to personal conversations on Facebook Live, who would have thought that on a fashion blog, fashion would take a backseat to conversions surrounding body confidence, wellness, self-discovery and courage. Well today I would like to look back at a few of those lessons, the ones you felt were most important and continue to revisit week after week. 2016 molded me in a way I never expected and I thank you, my readers, for keeping me honest, driven and humble.

The lesson of sensuality and sexuality: AND THEN THE LIGHTS CAME ON

Our ideals of sex are built around TV shows, conversations with our girlfriends and the occasional Cosmo Magazine. But do we ever really stop to talk about the grittiness of stripping down and putting our trust in someone else's hands? Do we talk about the strength of knowing the curves of our own bodies and the motions that take us to ecstasy? Do we ever talk about the fact that it's okay to build a sexual identity that is true to you and your needs? Whether with the lights on or off, alone or with a partner, your body and your emotions are your own.

I was a chunky kid, and I wasn't very good at sports nor did I have much stamina. I tried my best to keep up with my peers, which meant ignoring the stares, the chuckles and the not-so-helpful cheers of encouragement from bystanders.

Learning to turn my house into a home: 5 STEPS FOR CREATING A TRANQUIL BEDROOM

My room was dark, overcrowded and not functional. An oversized sleigh bed took up most of the space in my small bedroom and paired with its oversized dresser and side tables, we were left with minimal room to move. Honestly, I hated spending time in my room and it always felt like no matter what I did it still looked messy. Yes and the grey curtains and purple walls didn’t help with the doom and gloom feeling it had. Now you see why I had to start off first with my bedroom?

What I wasn't prepared for was the flood of emotions that ran through me when a young reader shared her story of being bullied at school because of her weight. Unfortunately, for many of us this is not a new story. We experience this day in and day out, in the news, in the fat memes on social media and in the hateful comments on sites of plus size influencers like Tess Holliday and Ashley Graham.

And like I promised in the broadcast, below is the recipe I am using for Golden Milk aka the turmeric tea I drink every morning. There are a few renditions of this recipe on Pinterest and I promise to update you on social media as I try out the different versions of it.

Learning not to apolgize for my fashion style: BECAUSE YOU DON’T ALWAYS HAVE TO MATCH – TO MATCH!

In true Latina form, I grew up in a household where everything matched. The curtains matched the rug that matched to the bathroom towels that of course matched the bedroom sheet sets. And yes, that rule also extended to our fashion selections.

The lesson of representation among all sizes: NO TAILORING NEEDED: ELOQUII’S PETITE CAPSULE COLLECTION

One of my biggest challenges as a 5'3 woman is finding items that truly work for my size and as a plus size woman that challenge is even more evident and frustrating. Often times, ordering something online or purchasing clothing in-store means a second trip to the tailor and with that an additional expense. Even worse, I am often left making purchasing decisions, not based on loving a piece of clothing but on if it can be tailored, how many adjustments would be needed and how much extra will it cost me.

Learning to turn off the negative voice in our head: TODAY WILL BE A GOOD DAY

Today, I ask that you take a step away from the negativity, the bullies, and the naysayers who try to strip you of your inner confidence and stretegth. I ask that you to channel your inner diva and to let go of the bad days of the past. If it's just for one day, I want to you to throw on that gorgous black dress that turn heads, those flashy pumps that make you feel like supermodel, or that sassy red lip that screams "I mean business".

The lesson of living life with confidence: FEELING CONFIDENT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

If you are anything like me then you probably already have a list of holiday events, gatherings and family functions to attend. This time of the year can bring a lot of anxiety and stress especially when it comes to seeing that favorite aunt who feels your weight needs to be the center of conversation.

So ladies, I hope that 2016 served as a year of growth and reflection for you and that some of these lesson stay with you through 2017 and beyond. Have a wonderful New Year's Eve and an even better New Year!
