Skinny = Healthy

The societal misconception is that skinny = healthy. The reality is that today our minds and spirits are constantly poisoned by a flawed notion of health, beauty and strength. So much so that 53% of 13-year-old girls and 78% of 17-year-old girls are unhappy with their looks (Cameron Russell, TED Talks) and the incidence of girls aged 10–14 attempting to take their lives has increased by 200% (CDC reported April 2016).   


As a society we are adopting a way of coping that has us in-and-out of diets, dealing with depression, and aligning self-care, such as exercise, with punishment.  35 percent of normal dieters progress to pathological dieting and, of those, 20-25 percent progress to partial or full-syndrome eating disorders (1).

Size Shaming

Size shaming, the act of criticizing and harassing someone based on their their weight or eating behavior has become the norm in our society. It is often justified as a way to motivate people, but research shows that it has the opposite effect.  An analysis by the Centre for Advancing Health indicated that high school students who believed themselves to be overweight were much more likely than their classmates to suffer from depression or to attempt suicide. (2)
