How Walmart saved my vacation?

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, then you may have noticed that I was on vacation in beautiful, sunny Puerto Rico.  This amazing trip was jammed packed with a little work, a little beach time and lots of family time as we celebrated my dad's 60th birthday (pictures of what I wore to the party to come).  The week before the trip I meticulously thought about what to pack.  As I usually do I created a list, pulled out my packing cubes and started sorting through my top options.  Several days before departure my bag was packed and ready to go.  In my carry-on was 2 weeks worth of clothing (yes, 2) which included swimwear, shorts and dresses.  In my oversized handbag I carried a spare swimsuit, my dress for the party, a second change of clothing and my makeup/hair accessories.

So far, everything was going as planned.  I left work on time and got home with a few hours to touch-up items around the house and despite traffic we actually ended up arriving to the airport early. That ladies and gentlemen, is when I noticed something was wrong.  As we started to unload all of our luggage I realized my perfectly packed little purple carry on was missing.  Somehow my darling husband loaded all of our bags, except for that one bag. With a complete deer in headlights look on his face, hubby suggested we go back home for the bag.  However, I knew that going back home, 45 minutes away, and making it back before our flight was impossible. I mean, we were early but not that early.

So instead of freaking out, I just laughed it off.  You see, I've been through a similar experience in the past where my luggage was lost on a business trip and good old faithful Walmart came to my rescue.  So yes, that was my plan.  Find the nearest Walmart on the island and raid their plus size section – all of course at the expense of my darling husband!  Now why Walmart you may ask?  I picked Walmart because I knew I could find core staples and cute options at an affordable price point.  I was not looking to blow our vacation money on clothes I didn't need.  Plus with additional options like accessories, shoes and handbags it was a great one stop shop location.  In addition, because Walmart is everywhere, I knew I could find one within miles of my hotel.

So here is what I found. I knew I would be in a swimsuit 90% of the time there, so I decided to go with a few staple items that I could mix and match. My biggest challenge was finding something work appropriate since black suits aren't an easy find in the Caribbean.   So I picked out a few tops (some that were on clearance), a few bottoms that I new I could wear well past my vacation and tada! I was able to build several looks to get me through the week.     IMG_3300.JPG

What do you think about how I made out?
